#Bogdan Bogdanovic’s gamble pays off with $72 million Hawks offer sheet

Bogdan Bogdanovic signed a four-year offer sheet worth $72 million from the Hawks, according to multiple reports Sunday.

The deal includes a player option in the fourth year and a 15 percent trade kicker, the New York Times reported. The Kings, with whom Bogdanovic has played since 2017, had 48 hours to match.

Should the Kings match the offer, the 6-foot-6 Serbian will have a full no-trade clause through the first season and cannot be traded to Atlanta. The max trade kicker in the offer sheet is structured so the team that deals him away must pay it, according to the Times.

In addition to selecting the 6-9 Onyeka Okongwu at No. 6 in the draft last week, the Hawks also lured former Knicks lottery pick Danilo Gallinari, Rajon Rondo and Kris Dunn to Atlanta in free agency.

The Hawks, who like the Knicks entered the offseason with plenty of cap space, have been on a signing spree.

Bogdanovic, the No. 27 pick in the 2014 draft, averaged a career-high 15.1 points per game last season — his third with the Kings — as well as 3.4 assists and 3.4 rebounds.

The Bucks and Kings had reportedly reached an agreement early last week on a sign-and-trade deal that would’ve sent Bogdanovic and Justin James to Milwaukee in exchange for Donte DiVincenzo, Ersan Ilyasova and D.J. Wilson. Bogdanovic, however, opted to move into the restricted free-agent marketplace to find an offer sheet or seek out other sign-and-trade options.

The NBA is now reportedly investigating if the failed deal occurred before league rules allowed.

Jayson Tatum agreed to a five-year, $195 million extension with the Celtics, ESPN reported.

The 22-year-old was eligible for his rookie scale extension this offseason. Since Boston drafted him third overall in 2017, Tatum has become one of the league’s most dynamic players. He was a first-time All-Star last season, averaging 23.4 points and shooting 45 percent from the floor and 40 percent from behind the arc.

During Boston’s playoff run, Tatum averaged 25.7 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. The Celtics have reached the Eastern Conference Finals twice in the three years he’s been on the team.

Tatum’s extension comes just a few days after Gordon Hayward declined his $34.2 million player option with the Celtics and signed a four-year deal with the Hornets.

The Timberwolves finalized a three-year, $21 million deal with restricted free agent Juancho Hernangomez, the Athletic reported. After nearly four years with the Nuggets, Hernangomez was traded to Minnesota in February. In 14 games with the team, he averaged 12.9 points and 7.3 rebounds while shooting 42 percent from 3-point range.

Center Willie Cauley-Stein signed a two-year, $8.2 million contract to return to the Mavericks, according to the Athletic. The deal has a team option on the second season. Cauley-Stein originally declined a player option worth $2.2 million heading into this offseason. In January, the Warriors traded Cauley-Stein to Dallas in exchange for a 2020 second-round pick.

Free-agent guard Sterling Brown reached an agreement with the Rockets, per Yahoo Sports.

Brown, the 76ers’ No. 46 pick in the 2017 draft, played the first three seasons of his NBA career in Milwaukee after Philly traded his draft rights. The 25-year-old struggled with injuries throughout his time with the Bucks but could prove to be a valuable addition to the Rockets’ wing depth.
