#Big Red Machine (Justin Vernon and Aaron Dessner) Announce New Album With Taylor Swift, Fleet Foxes, and More

Aaron Dessner and Justin Vernon have announced Big Red Machine’s second album. How Long Do You Think It’s Gonna Last? is out August 27 via 37d03d and it features collaborations with Taylor Swift (who worked with both Dessner and Vernon on her last two albums), Fleet Foxes’ Robin Pecknold, Sharon Van Etten, and more. Check out the video for Big Red Machine’s Anaïs Mitchell–featuring new song “Latter Days” below.

“It was clear to Anaïs that the early sketch Justin and I made of ‘Latter Days’ was about childhood, or loss of innocence and nostalgia for a time before you’ve grown into adulthood—before you’ve hurt people or lost people and made mistakes,” Dessner said in a statement. “She defined the whole record when she sang that, as these same themes kept appearing again and again.”

Taylor Swift features on How Long Do You Think It’s Gonna Last?’s “Birch” and “Renegade.” According to a press release, the latter collaboration was recorded at Swift’s Kitty Committee Studio in Los Angeles in March 2021, the same week that Swift and Aaron Dessner shared the 2021 Grammy Award for Album of the Year for folklore. “Renegade” also has orchestration from Dessner’s twin brother Bryce.

Since releasing Big Red Machine in 2018, Aaron Dessner and Justin Vernon have teamed up with R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe for the track “No Time for Love Like Now,” covered Aimee Mann’s “Wise Up,” and more. Last summer, Bon Iver released a new song called “AUATC,” which featured Bruce Springsteen, Jenny Lewis, and Jenn Wasner.
