As president, Joe Biden will face the “cruel Greek god” Nemesis as few presidents have, predicts Victor Davis Hanson at RealClearPolitics. After all, he can’t avoid the press forever. He will have “unscripted meetings with foreign leaders.” He may face “destructive rumors” about his “faculties or his family’s financial escapades” — more likely coming from “his own party’s left wing, eager for a Harris presidency,” than Republicans. He will also have “an ethical cloud” over his head, and his family or associates may talk. If Republicans take the House in 2022, they could impeach him as Democrats impeached President Trump, and a GOP-run Senate “might not so easily acquit him.” So “celebrate Biden’s call to unity.” He just better hope the opposition doesn’t do to him “what the Democrats did so bitterly to Trump.”

DC view: Andrew’s Rotten, No-Good Month

Gov. Cuomo “is arguably the biggest star in the Democratic Party,” who for months won “kudos far and wide . . . for his coronavirus-task-force briefings” — but in recent weeks “has committed some serious missteps, both rhetorically and with his actions,” notes Joe Concha at The Hill. His Trump-bashing doubts on the vaccine, including his lament “that the life-saving vaccines came too early”; his self-praising book and acceptance of an Emmy (“endzone dances and award speeches while hospitals are filling up is never a good look”); his anti-scientific indoor-dining shutdown; his pricey Thursday night fundraiser — all look awful. In short, “As 2020 turns to 2021, Andrew Cuomo is proving to be just another politician ­untethered from reality.”

Libertarian: The Revolt Against Lockdowns

Evidence shows “Americans are thoroughly sick of impoverishing, ­socially isolating lockdown orders” and are revolting against politicians who issue them, reports Reason’s J.D. Tuccille. “Businesses and individuals are ignoring restrictive rules that threaten their livelihoods, stifle social contact and threaten to strangle the necessary interactions of everyday life.” Small businesses have been hard hit, with 17 percent of restaurants “closed permanently or long-term.” Now “regular people driven to the brink of poverty and despair” are ignoring the mandates of politicians with “rules are only for the little people” attitudes and “pushing back against lockdown ­orders that they find more threatening than COVID-19.” Gov. Cuomo, Mayor de Blasio “and their colleagues near and far may loudly announce new restrictions on life,” but “ever-shrinking ranks” are “willing to listen.”

Hate watch: Warnock’s Ugly Israel Record

Georgia Senate candidate Raphael Warnock insists he isn’t anti-Israel — but, contend Steven Emerson and David M. Swindle at The Investigative Project on Terrorism, his assurances are belied by a long record of “one-sided, unfounded” broadsides against the Jewish state. To wit, a 2019 letter signed by the pastor falsely blamed Israel for ­“undrinkable water” in Gaza — when independent probes “found Hamas responsible,” because it spent humanitarian funds on terror. And in sermons, Warnock has demonized Israel, condemning it for “shooting down unarmed Palestinian sisters and brothers like birds of prey” based on tendentious interpretations of events. Can pro-Israel voters trust someone who “was comfortable signing his name to the claim that Israel was comparable to multiple racist, totalitarian states?”

Sports desk: Corporate Wokeness vs. US History

Major League Baseball’s Cleveland Indians are changing their name in the latest case of “corporate wokeness fixing a problem that doesn’t actually exist,” sighs The Federalist’s David Marcus. “The term ‘Indian’ to indicate a Native American is not even remotely racist.” Indeed, it’s the “term preferred by many Native Americans,” which is why the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian is called that. Yes, the name may have arisen from Christopher Columbus’ geographic mistake, but so what? “That was 500 years ago. And in the time since, the American Indian, though in many cases badly mistreated by the United States government, also became a central part of American history and legend. That is what we really risk losing in this damnation of history.”
