President Biden took time while touring tornado damage in Kentucky to get in a dig at notoriously unvaccinated Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
Biden told a storm survivor wearing a Packers winter hat, “Tell your quarterback he’s got to get the vaccine,” CBS News reporter Ed O’Keefe tweeted.
O’Keefe wrote that Biden, a lifelong Packers fan, made the wisecrack at the end of a longer conversation.
Rodgers admitted last month he had not been vaccinated against COVID-19, despite saying in August that he was “immunized,” and dissed “woke” advocates for vaccination.
The 79-year-old president toured the ravaged towns of Mayfield and Dawson Springs in western Kentucky, which were slammed by twisters last week.
Although Biden has attracted sizable protests during recent trips to heavily Democratic states he won last year — including Connecticut and New Jersey — he got a relatively warm welcome in the staunchly Republican area.
“There’s no red tornadoes or blue tornadoes. There’s no red states or blue states when this stuff starts to happen,” Biden said at a briefing at the Fort Campbell Army base.
A photo tweeted by BBC News reporter Tara McKelvey showed Biden appearing to bow his head in prayer with a family holding hands in the middle of the street.
McKelvey wrote that one onlooker carried a campaign flag for former President Donald Trump. As Biden emerged from his motorcade, someone shouted twice, “Let’s go, Brandon” — an anti-Biden neologism that means “F— Joe Biden.”
Speaking in Dawson Springs, Biden announced that the federal government would fully reimburse Kentucky for cleanup operations.
Biden also draped his arm around the shoulders of Kentucky first lady Britainy Beshear, 42, for about 15 seconds as he commended her for organizing a holiday toy drive that has collected 20,000 gifts for Christmas.
“No kid is going to go to sleep, wherever they get to sleep tonight, without a gift,” Biden said before releasing his grasp.
Biden also said he’s concerned about people suffering psychologically from the disaster and that he wanted the federal government to fund mental health efforts.
“There’s a lot of post-traumatic stress that comes from lying in your house and all of a sudden the roof goes blowing off and you wonder whether your kids are around,” he said.
“There’s a saying in small towns: ‘People know about it when you’re born and they care about it when you die,’” said Biden after at least 75 Kentucky residents, including 12 children, died in the Friday night storms.
Another 14 people were killed across five states neighboring Kentucky.
Adding a bit of folksy charm, Biden bid adieu to residents by saying: “When I come back I got one beautiful lady — and her husband — promised me a meal. She’s apparently a hell of a cook, so I’m coming back for the meal.”
A few moments later, Biden opened formal remarks by standing with an elementary-school-aged boy named Dane, who he called “a new friend of mine.” He also called up to the podium the boy’s cousin, a soon-to-be University of Kentucky graduate named Abby, and introduced them to the assembled media.
