“Better Call Saul’s Giancarlo Esposito Wants a ‘Rise of Gus’ Prequel Series”
For his part, Giancarlo Esposito endorses the idea of another spinoff following the rise of the Gus Fring character. There’s a lot of storyline potential there, because while Better Call Saul has offered many new clues about Fring’s backstory, there are still many big questions that remain. Esposito sees the value in leaving some mystery for fans to continue to think about long after the series ends, but as an actor, he’d rather provide more of these answers. Ideally, Esposito would love to see a Gus-centric prequel filling in the rest of the blanks. As the actor recently said on The Rich Eisen Show:
“I always feel like, every time this ends, I always feel I have more to give. And I’m an actor, so I want the audience to know everything about Gus Fring, but if you’re able to know less, there’s more mystery. So, just when I think it’s over, Vince Gilligan says, ‘You never know.’ Boy, do I love that. I’ve always wanted, I’ll just say it, I’ve always felt in my mind there is room for ‘The Rise of Gus.’ This show’s about Jimmy McGill, it’s a reflection of who we are and what we do, and who we become. How you become comfortable with that, justify it… Jimmy has a line in the fourth season, ‘I’m good at this!’ And you know what, I’m good at this. I can play this guy. And sooner or later, you’re going to see the whole picture, I believe.”
Better Call Saul’s Creators Are Open to Another Spinoff, But Not Right Now
There are no immediate plans to continue this story in any other spinoffs, but you never know what could happen in the future. Better Call Saul creators Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould have both said they’re open to doing more in this universe, just not exactly anytime soon. Each wants to focus on different creative endeavors at this time, but the door remains open to revisiting the Breaking Bad franchise.
”I love these characters, I love this world. Maybe someday, but personally I’m going to take a little break from that world and try something else, just to prove that I can,” Gould told Deadline.
“I think that’s my answer too, there are stories left to tell, but it’s not proving something to the world, it’s about proving something to yourself,” added Gilligan.
The sixth and final season of Better Call Saul will premiere on April 18 on AMC.
