The 76ers star will undergo surgery to remove a loose body from his left knee, according to multiple reports Saturday. He will leave the NBA’s bubble for the procedure as the 76ers will have to head to the playoffs without him.
The 24-year-old had suffered a subluxation of the patella in Wednesday’s game against the Wizards, though he reportedly did not have any ligament damage. The 76ers had declared him out indefinitely on Thursday and now his surgery is all but certain to knock Simmons out for the postseason — barring a deep playoff run, according to ESPN.
Simmons, who started his NBA career by missing his first season after foot surgery, averaged 16.4 points, eight assists and 7.8 rebounds per game this season. He had been the 76ers’ point guard but that changed upon the NBA’s restart with coach Brett Brown moving him back to power forward. Al Horford started in his spot Friday.
The 76ers currently own the No. 6 seed in the Eastern Conference, though they entered Saturday just one game back of the No. 4 seed.
