It was the Ides of March for this adorable alpaca named Ceasar.

A brown bear broke into the Alaska Zoo in Anchorage killing the popular, white-furred alpaca with tufted ears, officials said Wednesday.

The bear managed to tunnel under the zoo’s fencing early Sunday before the facility had opened to the public, knocking over bins and rummaging around before gaining access to the 16-year-old alpaca.

“It went through the zoo and killed our older male alpaca, Caesar,” executive director Patrick Lampi said. “He was a crowd favorite.”

Caesar’s companion, Fuzzy Charlie, had escaped but was found unharmed.

The alpaca killing sparked a day-long search for the bear. Alaska Fish and Game officials scoured the zoon using infrared scopes, only to determine the bear had left the grounds.

“We made sure that all of our animals were where they belong, all our bears were still in their enclosure and our tigers and all the other animals were unharmed,” Lampi said.

Officials set up cameras and spotted the bear returning the grounds a day later, when it was killed.

Lampi express remorse that the bear had to be put down.

“It was kind of a bizarre incident,” he said.

“There are occasionally bears in the area but they are usually not a problem,” Lampi went on. “This one just had developed some bad habits.”
