#Assemblyman Felix Ortiz’s former aide dodges jail for stealing cash

A former aide to veteran Assemblyman Felix Ortiz was sentenced to two years’ probation Monday for stealing more than $80,000 from the Brooklyn pol’s campaign account.

Maruf Alam, 30, faced as much as 20 years after pleading guilty to wire fraud in Brooklyn federal court in October 2019, but US District Judge Ann Donnelly spared him prison time. He must also forfeit $70,000 and complete 200 hours of community service, said his lawyer Ali Najmi.

“We thank the Court for recognizing Mr. Alam’s significant contributions to the community and his public service in their determination of this sentence,” Najmi told The Post.

Alam, who served as Ortiz’s chief of staff and campaign treasurer, siphoned the cash from 2012 to 2019 using some of the stolen funds to pay for a trip to China, officials said.

Alam began working for Felix in 2007 and earned a salary of $42,487.
