Disney and 20th Century released a new trailer on Tuesday for Kenneth Branagh’s ensemble thriller “Death on the Nile.”
The film is moving forward despite the disturbing allegations against its star Armie Hammer, 35.
Hammer’s face barely appears in the trailer alongside co-star Gal Gadot, 36. It also includes just one line from the beleaguered actor, who was accused earlier this year of “violently” raping woman named Effie. He also allegedly sent several women graphic sexual messages. The actor has denied the allegations, but has seen his career plunge in the months since.
The cinematic gymnastics in the bombshell trailer didn’t go unnoticed by eagle-eyed viewers, who immediately pointed out the many ways Hammer’s presence is hidden.
The Post has reached out to Disney about Hammer’s presence — or lack thereof — in the trailer.
The LAPD launched an investigation into the claims and the “Call Me By Your Name” actor checked himself into rehab in June. He left the facility on Dec. 11 and flew back home to the Cayman Islands.
After the claims surfaced, the “Social Network” star was dropped by his agent WME and fired from the Jennifer Lopez project “Shotgun Wedding” and the “Godfather” series, “The Offer.”
The much-delayed follow-up to the Irish director’s film “Murder on the Orient Express” was pushed back multiple times due to the pandemic and will officially be released on Feb. 11, 2022.
The adaption of Agatha Christie’s mystery novel follows Belgian detective Hercule Poirot as he sets sail to Egypt aboard glamorous river steamer. The trip turns deadly when he must search for a murderer among a sea of eclectic characters and their secrets.
Disney had also considered other options to replace Hammer in the film, according to the Hollywood Reporter. One route was to reshoot with a new star, similar to how Ridley Scott reshot 2017’s “All the Money in the World” following accusations against Kevin Spacey. The disgraced Oscar winner was replaced by the late Christopher Plummer, who filmed his scenes in just eight days.
However, that option wasn’t possible due to the pandemic and the large cast, sources told the Hollywood Reporter. Disney also had the choice of using digital technology to edit or fix the flick. But alas, the large scale of the ensemble cast and the amount of complex storylines weaved through the film led to this option not being used.
The situation surrounding Hammer, his upcoming film and his allegations is similar to “West Side Story” and its star, Ansel Elgort.
The 27-year-old actor was accused of sexual assault with an underage girl last June. While he has since denied the allegations, his role as Tony in the remake of the classic 1957 musical was kept and he continued to participate in press for the film.
