You were so close to pulling that sticker clean off your new plate or removing a label from a glass jar for reuse. Then, boom. It rips, and you’re left with sticker residue all over your item. Good news: there’s a simple way to remove it.

You don’t need to damage your poor fingernails attempting to scrape off the leftover glue. You just need to reach into your pantry for some paper towels and vinegar (because yes, vinegar does, in fact, work on everything from laundry to stainless steel).

To utilize this hack, soak a paper towel or cotton ball in vinegar and place it over the remaining stick and any left-over residue. Allow it to sit for 15 minutes. Remove the towel or cotton ball and see if the residue will lift with your finger. If it does, you’ll be able to peel the remaining glue right off.

If, however, there’s still tackiness, reapply the vinegar-soaked item and allows it to sit for another 15 minutes, and try again.

While vinegar is the item most people have on hand, it’s not the only method that works. You can also use OxiClean. Soaking items in a solution of OxiClean and water will cause those pesky labels and stickers to peel right off.

The next time you want to repurpose a wine bottle or jar, you’ll know exactly how to get them clean.
