If you thought there weren’t enough ads in your life, iPhone users could see them in the Maps app in 2023. That’s according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in a recent subscriber-only edition of his Power On newsletter.

MacRumors reports that Gurman stated, “I believe the engineering work is already underway to launch search ads in the Apple Maps app, and we should begin to see it be implemented sometime next year.” The ads would reportedly come in the form of recommended results. For example, searching “burger” in the Maps app could serve ads for nearby fast food joints, paid for by the franchise. These types of ads are already common in other map apps like Waze, Google Maps, and Yelp!

This isn’t the first time Gurman has predicted ads coming to the Maps app. Earlier this month, he wrote that Apple VP of advertising, Todd Teresi, was aiming to triple the ad revenue the company brings in. The company has already begun to show ads in the iOS App Store, allowing developers to showcase their programs at the top of search results. According to Gurman, the company has already begun internal tests to incorporate that advertising model into Maps.

With ads already in the App Store and possibly now in Maps, Apple may be signaling an end to the pristine walled-garden experience of iOS. If this prediction comes true, you may see ads in other popular Apple apps like Books, Podcasts, and Apple TV, Gurman speculates.
