#Andrew Yang says Kathryn Garcia is a runner up in NYC mayoral debate

Frontrunner Andrew Yang said he’d list his more experienced rival Kathryn Garcia as his second choice for mayor during Thursday’s debate for the Democratic primary election — even after she accused him of sexism for saying he’d appoint her as a deputy if he won the contest.

Spectrum News NY1 host Errol Louis asked the eight candidates to name which rival would be their No. 2 pick to lead City Hall in 2022.

Yang, who has no government experience and has not voted in local elections, said he’d choose Garcia.

Garcia, who first worked for the city’s Sanitation Department as an intern at age 22 before becoming the agency’s commissioner under current mayor Bill de Blasio, is known as a “crisis manager” for handling municipal emergencies from Hurricane Sandy to lead the problem in public housing.

Garcia told The New Yorker earlier this month, “I would like Andrew Yang to stop saying that. I’m not running for No. 2. It’s totally sexist. Totally sexist.”

Garcia said she “doesn’t have a No. 2.”

Ray McGuire, a former Citigroup executive who like Yang is a political newcomer, said Garcia would be his second choice.

The primary will be the first citywide election to use the new ranked-choice voting system. That means New Yorkers will be able to select their preference of up to five candidates running for mayor and other offices — and the ballots will be tallied by first, second, third, fourth and fifth choice, eliminating the need for runoff elections.
