#Food banks impacted by nation-wide baby formula shortage

“Food banks impacted by nation-wide baby formula shortage”

A country-wide shortage of baby formula is hitting food banks and pantries that help lower-income clients.

Derrick Williams, operations manager for the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina in Raleigh, N.C., said Friday that his food bank, which helps 600,000 people, is “definitely being impacted” by the shortage.

“We have seen very little baby formula, and we have had recalls on some baby formula,” he told Fox News. “If we do get it [baby formula] at all, we have to make sure it hasn’t been recalled.”

Inflation, supply chain issues as well as recalls resulted in a 30 percent drop in the availability of some popular brands of baby formula in retail outlets across the country last month.

The federal government’s Women Infants and Children’s Special Supplemental Nutrition Program provides assistance with obtaining formula to lower-income families, but some food banks also offer formula to their clients.

In North Carolina, the federal program, known as WIC, has been”working closely with families” to provide support and information about available options,” according to a statement Friday.
