The e-commerce titan said it is removing all products bearing the Redskins logo and name — widely seen as a racial slur against Native Americans — now that the moniker is under review.
Amazon communicated the decision to its third-party sellers Wednesday, saying they would have 48 hours to review and remove any items flagged by the company. Some books and memorabilia bearing the team’s name were still listed on the site Thursday morning.
Walmart, Target, Dick’s Sporting Goods and Nike — the NFL’s official jersey supplier — have also stopped selling the Washington squad’s gear amid a renewed push to get rid of the name, which Native Americans have long decried as offensive.
Under mounting pressure from sponsors and Native American rights groups, Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder said last week he would consider changing the name of the team, whose roots date back to the 1930s.
The team on Friday announced a “thorough review” as Nike called for a change along with FedEx and PepsiCo, two of the Redskins’ major corporate sponsors. Investors had reportedly pressed the companies to cut ties with the team if it did not ditch the name.
The Redskins have faced calls for years to change their name, which the National Congress of American Indians has called a “contemptuous” and “racist” term. The latest push came amid widespread protests against racism and police brutality after a white cop killed George Floyd, a black man, in Minneapolis.
