Iyana Curtis, 23, was driving a 2013 Ford F-450 ambulance near Dewitt Avenue and Malta Street in East New York just after 6:30 p.m. on June 30 when she struck Dane Striani, police said.
Cops said Curtis, who was on duty at the time, had slowed as she approached the intersection while heading east on Dewitt Avenue.
Curtis stopped when she heard a loud noise, got out of the ambulance and spotted Striani lying in the crosswalk, according to cops.
Striani had tried to cross the avenue from the south side of the road, police said.
The EMT first treated Striani at the scene and then rushed him to Brookdale Hospital, cops said.
Striani eventually died from his injuries on Sunday, according to police.
Curtis was arrested Thursday and charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian, failure to stop at a stop sign and failure to exercise due care, police said. It’s unclear if she was responding to a call at the time.
The EMT joined the fire department in June of 2017 and was a 2015 FDNY Captain Vernon A. Richards High School for Fire and Life Safety valedictorian, according to the FDNY’s social media posts.
The fire department did not immediately respond for comment.
