Last month, Alex G shared “End Song,” the paradoxically titled lead single from his score for Jane Schoenbrun’s forthcoming indie horror feature, We’re All Going to the World’s Fair. He’s now shared “Main Theme,” which will play during the film’s opening credits and reappear throughout. The soundtrack is due out next Friday, April 15 via Milan Records, a week before the movie’s wide release.
The new song finds Alex G’s vocals pitch-shifted eerily, his lyrics nearly incomprehensible over an ever-thickening morass of moody acoustic guitar chords, quiet drums, and a wining synth that pulls the track into even more unsettling territory while also giving it a mournful overtone.
“I love horror films, but it was also important to me that my film feel more than just scary,” Schoenbrun writes. “I wanted it to feel gentle, sad, personal, and homemade: the kind of ‘horror’ movie that might make you cry. When Alex’s gorgeous, emotive ‘Main Theme’ enters during our opening credits (and then recurs in mutated forms throughout the movie), it’s meant as a signal to the audience of exactly this ambition.”
