#Alex Cameron critiques modern methods of self-care on “K Hole”

With the release of his fourth album, Oxy Music, less than two weeks away, Alex Cameron has shared its third single, “K Hole.” The new song follows November’s “Sara Jo” and January’s “Best Life” on both the record’s release schedule and its tracklist.

Like these two previous releases — and much of Cameron’s work — “K Hole” pairs sardonic critique of modern life with cheery, yacht-rock instrumentation. Falling at the end of Oxy Music‘s middle third, it finds the album’s wayward protagonist warding off his physical pain and emotional demons with ketamine before falling into the opioid addiction to which the project’s title alludes.

“Generation self medication,” Cameron meditates on the song. “Social groups, shattered mirrors pieced back together and bound by saliva. Holding hands just to say ‘it’s Ok that everything isn’t Ok.’ There’s love here, and peace, if you’re alright with being on your own. We like it in pairs — but there’s only room for one in a K Hole.”

The single comes with a Jim Larson-directed video in which Cameron receives an infusion treatment from bandmates Roy Malloy and Justin Nijssen that transports him to a colorful dream sequence in a church.
