On March 17th , 2022, Adult Swim celebrated the 25th anniversary of its Toonami anime block by announcing two new FLCL anime sequels and an original anime series called Housing Complex C. 

Variety reports that the two new FLCL seasons are currently in production and titled FLCL: Grunge and FLCL: Shoegaze respectively. Adult Swim streamed a 10-second teaser of FLCL: Grunge featuring Haruko Haruhara swinging her signature guitar around. The video contains a snippet of the original anime’s ending theme “Ride on Shooting Star” by The Pillows.

Hitoshi Takekiyo (After School Midnighters) is directing FLCL Grunge at MontBlanc Pictures. It will premiere sometime in 2023. Meanwhile, FLCL: Shoegaze will be directed by Yutaka Uemura (Saga of Tanya the Evil) with animation production by Production I.G and NUT.

Housing Complex C will be directed by Yuuji Nara at Ogikubo-based animation studio Akatsuki, with amphibian credited with the script writing and original concept. The studio is most notable for working on an anime-inspired Gucci advertisement featuring Miley Cyrus. Toonami posted a 20-second teaser trailer on its Facebook page. 

Adult Swim describes the original anime’s story as

Housing Complex C centers around Kimi, who lives in a small, low-cost housing complex located in the seaside town of Kurosaki, where trouble seems to follow her wherever she goes, and horrific incidents begin to occur. Is an ancient evil stalking the residents of Housing Complex C?

Toonami creative director Jason DeMarco is the executive producer for both FLCL series and Housing Complex C. Production I.G. USA‘s Maki Terashima-Furuta also joins as producer for all projects. 

The original FLCL OVA inspired two sequel series, FLCL Alternative and FLCL Progressive, that aired in 2018 and ran for six episodes each.
