#Adam Gase will give up Jets play-calling again after flicker of hope

The Jets are sticking with what worked … for a little while.

Jets coach Adam Gase said offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains will call the plays again this week against the Chiefs. Loggains took over play-calling last week against the Bills and had success early, with the Jets gaining 186 yards and scoring 10 points in the first half. The second half was a complete failure, though, as the Jets gained just 4 yards and failed to score.

Gase said he still feels it is valuable for him to take a step back and devote time to the defense and special teams.

“I do think there’s going to be things that I’ll notice throughout this process,” Gase said. “I just don’t think it’s a one-week thing. I don’t even really think saying, ‘Hey, there was one week, now we’ll change it back to what we were doing.’ I think I’ve got to see this play out a little bit where other things will pop up. There might be some other things that I noticed that maybe I could get fixed that will help us do things better in the long run.”

Gase said it was strange Sunday not calling the plays. He had called plays since his days as offensive coordinator with the Broncos, beginning in 2013.

“For three-plus hours I’m used to always doing something, looking at pictures, kind of writing my notes down, thinking through the next series,” Gase said. “It’s just a different vantage point because you look through the pictures and you might get a couple suggestions and now you’re on the defensive side actually really intensely watching what’s going on, listening to what’s going on, hearing what they’re talking about, thinking through situational things of, ‘Hey, is there anything I can do to help them.’ It’s just a different — you’re doing something completely different than what I’ve done in the past.”

The Jets have the worst offense in football. They are at or near the bottom in most statistical categories. They are searching for anything to give them a spark.

Gase said QB Sam Darnold came through Sunday’s game without any further issues in his shoulder. Still, the plan is for him to be limited in practice this week. … WR Jamison Crowder (groin) did not practice Wednesday. The Jets hope he can practice Thursday and play this week against the Chiefs. … Kicker Sam Ficken (groin) did not practice. Gase said they will test him out Friday. … OLB Jordan Jenkins (ribs/shoulder), OL Conor McDermott (illness), S Bradley McDougald (shoulder) and WR Breshad Perriman (concussion) did not practice. Gase said McDougald’s injury could be serious and the Jets were getting a second opinion. … Rookie DL Jabari Zuniga was activated off injured reserve. He has yet to play this year. … DL Kyle Phillips was placed on injured reserve. … LB Patrick Onwuasor was designated to return to practice from IR. … QB David Fales was released from the practice squad. … WR Lawrence Cager was restored to the practice squad from IR.
