Above-ground subway service was suspended Tuesday afternoon as Tropical Storm Isaias ripped through New York City, downing trees and sending debris flying onto the tracks.

The MTA said at around 1:15 p.m. that it would be running trains underground only until the heavy winds died down.

Transit officials also shut down LIRR service due to the dangerous conditions caused by the storm, “including fallen trees, downed utility poles and power outages.”

All Metro-North lines were also halted.

Traffic was closed on the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge in both directions and on both levels due to the powerful winds.

And the Staten Island Ferry was suspended at around 1 p.m., but resumed service running every half hour beginning at around 3 p.m., when the skies began to clear and the gusts grew calmer.

Winds roared at up to 80 mph in coastal areas near the city as the storm rolled in Tuesday afternoon.
