The Idol was announced in June 2021, with The Weeknd signing on as a co-creator and actor. The story follows a self-help guru and leader of a modern-day cult who develops a romantic yet difficult relationship with an up-and-coming pop star.
Starring alongside The Weeknd was Lily Rose-Depp, Troye Sivan, Suzanna Son and Steve Zissis, while Melanie Liburd, Tunde Adebimpe, Elizabeth Berkley Lauren, Nico Hiraga and Anne Heche were starring in recurring roles. It’s unclear who has left the show due to the changes being made to the cast but six episodes had already been shot.
