It appears testing positive for coronavirus may have complicated Yasiel Puig’s deal with the Atlanta Braves.

The 29-year-old outfielder made the announcement on Twitter Friday afternoon, saying that he’s asymptomatic but quarantining until he gets two consecutive negative tests. Puig also alluded to the fact that he is still a free agent, which The Athletic confirmed.

“I am sorry to share with my fans, friends and family who follow me and who really support me, that I have just been notified that I have tested positive for COVID-19,” he wrote. “Although I tested positive. I am asymptomatic, and I feel absolutely fine. I will be quarantined until I receive two negative test results, which I hope will arrive shortly.”

Puig and the Braves were reportedly in the midst of “serious” contract negotiations, but things would only go through if Puig tested negative for coronavirus. The Braves could choose to revisit the situation after Puig tests negative twice.

Splitting the 2019 season between the Reds and Indians, Puig hit .267/.327/.458 with 24 home runs over 149 games. He would be a much-needed offensive addition for Atlanta, which has been looking to bulk up its batting order after outfielder Nick Markakis opted out of the 2020 season.
