President Trump and Yankees legend Mariano Rivera greeted Little Leaguers in the White House Rose Garden to celebrate MLB Opening Day Thursday.

Trump said he was grateful to have the season start, even under the unusual circumstances of the global coronavirus pandemic.

“Especially at this time when we have the COVID and all the things going on, to have baseball back means so much to me,” Trump said during the event.

Trump praised the former Yankees reliever known for his lights-out performances during the team’s 1990s dynasty. The president last year awarded Rivera the Medal of Freedom.

The Yankees are opening the coronavirus-shortened season against the Washington Nationals Thursday evening, with Dr. Anthony Fauci set to toss out the first pitch.

Trump during a press briefing on the coronavirus the Rose Garden event said he plans to throw out the first pitch himself at Yankee Stadium next month.

“I think I’m doing that on Aug. 15 at Yankee Stadium,” Trump said. “And I say, ‘How’s the crowd going to be?’ And, you know, it’s like you don’t have a crowd.”
