#Beloved ‘Cheers’ bar in Boston announces last call because of COVID-19

The bar “where everybody knows your name” is no longer.

One of the real-life “Cheers” locations in Boston is closing its doors for good.

The fan-favorite Faneuil Hall watering hole, which was modeled to look like the set of the famed sitcom, will shut down on August 30.

“Cheers” aired on NBC — racking up 28 Emmy wins and 117 nominations — from 1982 to 1993, and starred Ted Danson, Shelley Long, Rhea Perlman, Kirstie Alley, Woody Harrelson, George Wendt and John Ratzenberger.

Regulars shouldn’t cry into their pints: The original bar that actually inspired the show, located on historic Beacon Street across from the Boston Public Garden, is still pouring beers. Originally opened in 1969 as the Bull & Finch Pub, the Beacon Hill Cheers hosts a themed gift shop if you’re looking to indulge your nostalgia.

Founder Tom Kershaw made the announcement in a press release, according to Boston.com.

“I have faced, and pulled through, many kinds of downturns and upticks in the economy within the last 20 years Cheers Replica Bar at Faneuil Hall Marketplace has been in business,” he said.

“Sadly, the COVID-19 pandemic, combined with no assistance from our landlord (Ashkenazy Acquisition Group), has made this current challenge insurmountable.”

Like in New York City, many longtime institutions in Boston have closed because of the coronavirus, including famed music hall Great Scott — although owners hope to reopen in a new location.
