#Joe Judge worked on interview game during Giants’ scrimmage

As he came off the field after the first half of Friday night’s scrimmage, Joe Judge paused for a few minutes to conduct a halftime interview before he headed into the locker room.

A halftime interview in a scrimmage? Yup.

Judge, ever details-conscious, wanted to make this as exact a facsimile to a real game as he could.

“Absolutely,’’ he said. “Everything we did was very intentional, in making sure we checked every box for what myself, every other coach and every player would experience as close as we can to when we play our opening night game.’’

This included the halftime and post-scrimmage interviews. This included Judge throwing the red challenge flag to explore whether or not Saquon Barkley stepped out of bounds on a sideline run (he did not). This included how the Giants warmed up, how they handled their time in the locker room at halftime and how they coaching staff communicated at MetLife Stadium.

The Giants open their season Sept. 14 in a “Monday Night Football’’ matchup with the Steelers. Judge wants to get the glitches out of the way before then.

“We’re going to go through it with a fine-tooth comb and make sure that we talk about everything we did operationally and what we have to clean up,’’ Judge said. “Obviously, it’s never perfect. Obviously, it’s never as sharp as you want it to be. But overall, I thought it was a good start to where we’re going.’’

Blake Martinez’s injury situation bears watching. Martinez, the defensive signal-caller and starting inside linebacker, missed practice late last week and was held out of the scrimmage with an undisclosed ailment.

Judge has been vague on this. He initially said it was nothing to be overly concerned about. Asked Friday night if this is still the case, Judge said “Yeah, I’ll check with the trainers and see where he’s at right there.”

TE Evan Engram, one of the top performers in training camp, was in uniform but did not participate. Engram is coming off foot surgery.

“Honestly, we’ve just been pounding him so much in practice that we’ve really kind of backed off a little bit with load management,’’ Judge said. “There were a lot of other guys we had to evaluate, so we wanted to make sure they got maximum reps and we pulled back a time limit for everyone.’’

RB Wayne Gallman fell into disfavor with the previous coaching staff and the signing of Dion Lewis did not bode well for the 2017 fourth-round draft pick. Gallman, though, deserves a spot on the roster. He is able to produce when given the opportunity, something that is difficult for a young player tasked with backing up Barkley. Gallman scored two touchdowns in the scrimmage, the first on a 45-yard run, the second on 5-yard touchdown reception on a pass from Cooper Rush.

“In terms of Wayne, he’s a guy who’s really flashed over the course of the entire training camp,’’ Judge said. “He’s a guy that we’ve challenged and told him we want to see how he responds in competitive situations. Obviously he had a good night. But he’s a guy that’s shown a lot of potential throughout his career. He’s shown a lot of improvement for us, and we’re happy with the night he had.’’

The Giants made the signing of cornerbacks Brandon Williams and KeiVarae Russell official. Both were 2016 third-round draft picks. Williams played in 45 games for the Cardinals and Russell played in 20 games for the Bengals. To make room on the roster, RB Javon Leake and CB Christian Angulo were waived.
