“#42 Democratic county chairs tell Andrew Cuomo to ‘immediately’ quit”
More than 40 Democratic county chairs on Friday jointly called on Gov. Andrew Cuomo to resign, declaring that it’s time for New York to “move on” from the third-term chief executive accused of serial sexual harassment of women.
“We have individually called for his resignation, and now we do so with one voice,” reads the statement, signed by 42 Democratic county chairs.
“We thank him for his years of service to the greater state of New York, which we all know he holds dear, but demand that he immediately step down,” it continued. “It’s time to move on.”
Among the signatories of the proclamation are former close ally Rodneyse Bichotte, the party boss in Brooklyn, Keith Wright, chair of the Manhattan Democratic Party, Suzanne Berger, who holds the position in Westchester, and The Bronx’s Jamal Bailey, who also represents parts of the borough in the State Senate.
Steve Bellone of Suffolk County along with leaders of the Staten Island and Queens Democratic parties were absent from the list of Democratic county chairs who signed on.
The united front beseeching Cuomo to step side from local members of his own party comes after several elected officials at the city, state and national level have stated that Cuomo should leave office.
President Joe Biden, State Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie, Mayor Bill de Blasio, Democratic mayoral nominee Eric Adams and governors of neighboring states have all voiced their position that it’s time for the 63-year-old Democrat — accused of rampant, illegal sexual harassment of younger women — to go.
On Tuesday, state Attorney General Letitia James revealed the findings of her probe, which documented that the governor is alleged to have sexually harassed 11 women, including current and former staffers, in violation of state and federal laws. In turn, Cuomo faces criminal probes in at least four New York counties, including Albany.
