#1M NYC residents will get COVID vaccine in January

One million New York City residents will receive the coronavirus vaccine in the first month of 2021, Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a New Year’s Eve pledge.

“We’re going to vaccinate 1 million New Yorkers in January,” the mayor told CNN.

It’s an ambitious New Year’s resolution. Thus far, about 80,000 city residents have gotten the first of two doses of the vaccine — health care workers, first responders and nursing home residents, those deemed most at risk from COVID-19 exposure.

“More and more people want to get the vaccine and we’re going to do that,” said de Blasio, calling the campaign a “call to arms.”

The mayor said the city will expand the locations where residents can get jabbed with the vaccine — including mobile “pop-up” sites and schools.

He said the city “has the capacity” to do 1 million vaccinations in January but it will need the federal government and manufacturers to ramp up distribution.

De Blasio also said the city is working closely with Gov. Andrew Cuomo and state health officials, who set up the criteria on who gets offered the vaccine and when.

“New York City can do this at a record pace,” he said. “Give us the vaccine, we’ll make it happen.”

Complaints have mounted locally and nationally about the slow pace of vaccine administration, and who has been getting it.

Earlier this week, the governor announced that recovering addicts in residential substance abuse treatment centers will get vaccinated.

Congressional staffers also got the green light to get inoculated from COVID-19.

Meanwhile, the rollout of vaccine distribution to city police officers was delayed.
