Just like Sony, Canon, and Panasonic, Nikon wants to make your life easier if you own one of its DSLR cameras and can’t find a webcam due to shortages. Thanks to new software for both Windows and Mac, you can turn your Nikon camera into a high-end webcam. Best of all, the software is free.

Nikon freely admits the software is in a beta status right now, so you can expect some issues using it. But considering dedicated webcams are hard to find ever since the global pandemic started, beggars can’t be choosers. At least you can skip spending a lot of money on a marked up webcam and use something you already own.

The software works with both Nikon DSLR cameras and Mirrorless cameras, you’ll just need download it, connect your camera to your computer, and use it like you would a webcam. The one downside may be power management, as most DLSR and Mirrorless cameras run off batteries with no plug-in option.

To start, the software works with the following camera models:

  • Z 7II
  • Z 7
  • Z 6II
  • Z 6
  • Z 5
  • Z 50
  • D6
  • D5
  • D850
  • D810
  • D780
  • D750
  • D500
  • D7500
  • D7200
  • D5600
  • D5500
  • D5300
  • D3500

You can download the software from Nikon’s site right now.
