#12 Characters We’re Worried About Going Into the 2020-21 Season

TV Characters 2020 2021 Worried About

David Giesbrecht/FOX; Jeff Weddell/The CW; CBS

Some shows are still wrapping up their current seasons, but we’re already looking ahead to those definitely returning in 2020 and 2021 (even though some return dates are still very much up in the air).

This past year was a rough one for some of our favorite TV characters, with finales ending in such a way that left us worried about them. While some fates were left up in the air (will A Million Little Things‘ Eddie survive?), others weren’t in the best place psychologically (how worried should we be about Evil‘s Kristen?).

Scroll down to see the characters we’re most worried about looking ahead at the 2020-2021 season.

TV Characters 2020 2021 Worried About A Million Little Things Eddie

ABC/Sergei Bachlakov

A Million Little Things‘ Eddie (David Giuntoli)

Everything started going right for Eddie in Season 2. He and Katherine (Grace Park) worked on their marriage and were planning to renew their vows. He was able to convince Delilah (Stephanie Szostak) to stop lying about the identity of baby Charlie’s father. He was sober. But then the past came back to haunt him, and he looked into the death of a friend when he was younger, which eventually drove him to nearly drink. And just as he didn’t and left the bar to return home to Katherine, he was hit by a car. Will he survive? If he does, what will his recovery look like in Season 3?

TV Characters 2020 2021 Worried About Batwoman Alice

Katie Yu/The CW

Batwoman‘s Alice (Rachel Skarsten)

Alice knows what she wants — or at least, she thinks she does. In the finale, as part of letting go of her past and refusing to leave Gotham and her plan for revenge behind with Mouse (Sam Littlefield), she killed her brother. And now, with his new face of Bruce Wayne (Warren Christie), Tommy Elliot/Hush can waltz into Wayne Enterprises and get the piece of kryptonite that can penetrate Batwoman’s suit so she can kill her sister Kate. But will that be enough for her, or might she realize that getting what she thinks she wants won’t make her happy? And if that’s the case, Gotham and its citizens are going to be the ones to pay probably a deadly price.

TV Characters 2020 2021 Worried About Chicago PD Atwater

Matt Dinerstein/NBC

Chicago P.D.‘s Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins)

Atwater put aside his past run-in with fellow CPD officer Doyle (Mickey O’Sullivan) to close a case in the Season 7 finale, but he couldn’t stay quiet when the other man’s racial profiling led to his own and an innocent man’s deaths. Knowing that Doyle has friends and family in the CPD and Mayor’s office, Atwater informed Internal Affairs of what really happened. After being assured by Voight (Jason Beghe) and Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) that Intelligence had his back, he went home to find Doyle’s allies waiting in their squad cars on his street. Just how worried should Atwater be about his new enemies?

TV Characters 2020 2021 Worried About Evil Kristen

CBS

Evil‘s Kristen (Katja Herbers)

Has Kristen turned to the dark side? As fun as it was to see the demon as Leland’s (Michael Emerson) therapist in the penultimate episode, he had us worried about Kristen when he appeared in the finale. With Orson (Darren Pettie) the serial killer free, Kristen was worried about her kids’ safety — and the finale suggested that she took matters into her own hands and killed him. (What other explanation is there for the blood on her leg?) Then, in the last scene, a cross burned her hand. Is she possessed? Did she kill Orson? How will all of that affect her and what we see from Kristen in Season 2?

TV Characters 2020 2021 Worried About FBI Maggie

Jeff Neumann/CBS

FBI‘s Maggie (Missy Peregrym)

With Peregrym pregnant, the CBS drama sent her character on a months-long undercover assignment for “a pretty big case.” But due to the season ending early and production schedule changes, it’s possible that Maggie won’t be gone for as many episodes as initially planned. Could the undercover op go south and the team be looped in to help? Even if it doesn’t, being away from her team and undercover for that long could lead to a different Maggie when she returns — and while that doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad thing, we could see it taking her time to adjust to being back.

TV Characters 2020 2021 Worried About The Flash Iris

Shane Harvey/The CW

The Flash‘s Iris (Candice Patton)

While looking into a story, the reporter ended up in the Mirrorverse, with her family and friends none the wiser at first and a “mirror” version of her a replacement. By season’s end, the team was working to free her and allies Kamilla (Victoria Park) and Singh (Patrick Sabongui), but Iris had been trapped the longest and was feeling the effects. Just as she was able to possibly narrow down the MIA Singh’s location, she disappeared. Not only do we have no idea where she went, but we’re very worried about the long-term effects of the Mirrorverse on her once the team frees their loved ones.

TV Characters 2020 2021 Worried About Grey's Anatomy DeLuca

ABC/Raymond Liu

Grey’s Anatomy‘s DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti)

Though many — especially his sister Carina (Stefania Spampinato) — noticed DeLuca’s (at times) manic behavior in Season 16, he refused to believe he, like his father, has bipolar I. However, the Grey’s finale ended with him ready to consider there was something going on, and though the medical drama didn’t air its final four planned episodes, the spinoff Station 19 seemingly confirmed it. (Carina told her girlfriend, firefighter Maya, that he “inherited it.”) How will we see that play out in Season 17?

TV Characters 2020 2021 Worried About Prodigal Son Ainsley

David Giesbrecht/FOX

Prodigal Son‘s Ainsley (Halston Sage)

Murder seems to run in the Whitly family’s blood — at least when it comes to father Martin (Michael Sheen), a.k.a. the serial killer the Surgeon, and his daughter, Ainsley, who brutally stabbed the villainous Nicholas Endicott (Dermot Mulroney) as he boasted that he’d never be taken down by a traditional justice system. Was that simply because of the hurt Nicholas had caused her family, or did that open a door for Ainsley that could lead to more bodies dropping? Will she be facing any legal consequences, or might her brother Malcolm’s (Tom Payne) FBI and NYPD experience help cover up the true nature of the crime?

TV Characters 2020 2021 Worried About SEAL Team Cerberus

CBS

SEAL Team‘s Cerberus (Dita)

In Season 3, Brock (Justin Melnick) could tell that Bravo’s canine member had been “off” during a mission and it wasn’t just a bad day. “You gotta know the signs,” he explained to Jason (David Boreanaz). “It’s on me to know when he’s had enough.” Has he had enough? While we wonder just how much Bravo could change (if at all) in Season 4, we’re worried the most about Cerberus’ future with the team.

TV Characters 2020 2021 Worried About Supergirl Brainy

Sergei Bachlakov/The CW

Supergirl‘s Brainy (Jesse Rath)

Though Brainy worked with Lex Luthor (Jon Cryer), he refused to carry out the villain’s plan of killing Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) and chose to stop the immortal Leviathan his own way: shrinking and bottling them. But to do so was a suicide mission, and last we saw him, as Lex snatched the bottled Leviathan from his hands, Brainy was dying. The others were on their way, but will they be too late or might they be able to save him?

TV Characters 2020 2021 Worried About Supernatural Sam Dean

Jeff Weddell/The CW

Supernatural‘s Sam and Dean (Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles)

The final seven episodes of the CW drama will air this fall — they still have two left to film — and when it returns, the Winchesters and their allies are still going to be trying to figure out a way to stop God (Rob Benedict). What the final Big Bad has wanted is to see one brother kill the other, and while it’s hard to imagine the Sam and Dean we’ve gotten to know over 15 years doing that, we do worry about one or both of them dying in the finale (at someone else’s hand). And if only one of them dies, we don’t know how the other will cope, especially if they can’t make a deal to bring him back.
