10 Top Cities in Germany to Visit

1.) Schwerin

Schwerin is the capital city of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and is perched in the northeast of Germany. There’s a thing for sure, the smaller towns within Germany (like Schwerin) often are not considered in the same way as their bigger counterparts (Berlin and Hamburg, for instance); however, it’s worth a look.

My opinion is that the city’s most impressive feature should be Schwerin Palace, an incredible 1000-year-old structure home to the state legislature.

If you’re in Schwerin, get some fresh seafood at LUKAS Restaurant. LUKAS (which is delicious). If you’re looking for an excellent place to relax, check into Hotel Speicher am Ziegelsee. Hotel Speicher Ziegelsee is located just a few steps from the water.

2.) Hamburg

Hamburg is one of my top cities in Germany (and one that I’d like to return to again). It is located in the Jutland Peninsula, in the north of Germany. It has plenty of things to see and do! And, as I’ve said that it’s home to some of the most famous cafés in Germany, such as Zuckermonarchie’s, Less Political and Public Coffee Roasters. Hamburg has a lot of festivals and street fairs and is a perfect destination to visit. One of them is Hafengeburtstag, which celebrates the foundation of the port.

Another major event is the Christmas market in the city, and it is the MS Dockville Festival (which we attended the last time). If you’re craving sweets, you must get an area for a bite at Harbor Cake – they’re the best cakes in the city.

3.) Berlin

Berlin can be described as one of the super cool cities constantly evolving in a new and exciting way! Every time I’ve been there, I’ve had an entirely different and exciting experience that genuinely showcases the diverse nature of Berlin.

Once you’re there, ensure you spend time exploring the fantastic sights. These include the Reichstag, Brandenburg Gate, the Berlin Cathedral and East Side Gallery. This is just a handful of locations, but it is possible to learn more about the most significant places to visit. 4.) Cologne

Cologne was historically a Roman outpost right to the beginning of the century AD and was one that was as vibrant as it was in the past. Nowadays, Cologne is one of the largest cities in Germany and is a lively cultural region within Rhineland.

If you’re in Cologne, ensure you go to the Cathedral (and up the numerous steps). The climb isn’t easy to eat with a full stomach, and you should avoid eating before your visit!

5.) Leipzig

Is a city with a unique and straightforward arty vibe (if that’s a good idea) and rich history. Once you’re here, see the dramatic Volkers, explore the Old City Hall (and Market Square) and see the views from the Panorama Towers.

6.) Dusseldorf

Dusseldorf is a cosmopolitan town and the capital of North Rhine-Westphalia. It is often misconstrued as a city that is primarily a working one and not an attraction as such. Let me say that this is the most common misconception, and it’s a delightful and vibrant city after you’ve scratched the surface.

If you’re in the area, visit the Rheinufer region, visit Schloss Benrath and explore Carlsplatz Markt, which is perfect on a bright day. After a long day of exploration and exploring, visit Nagaya to enjoy some of the finest sushi in the city.

7.) Frankfurt

Frankfurt could be one of the world’s most important cities in Germany and is the biggest financial center in mainland Europe it is for sure.

For many centuries, the kings and queens from Germany were elected here, making Berlin one of the biggest cities in the history of Germany. If you’re a reader (like me), you should try to go to the largest Book Fair, which first began at the end of the 15th century. If books aren’t your thing, you may want to avoid this!

When you’re there, be sure you visit St Bartholomew’s Cathedral (the burial place of Bartholomew the Apostle). Explore the art inside the Staedel Museum and wander around Kleinmarkthalle (one of the most popular markets for fleas in town).

8.) Nuremberg

Nuremberg is among the most famous cities in Germany and has plenty of attractions to visit.

After arriving:

• Visit the Altstadt and St. Lorenz Church.
• Stroll through the colourful streets of Weissgerbergasse.
• Savour some gingerbread (famous in this area).
• Contemplate the horrific events of history on The Documentation Centre Nazi Rally Grounds.

Also, be sure to go to The Neues Museum Nurnberg – the artworks are extraordinary!

9.) Heidelberg

Heidelberg is usually considered among the small cities of Germany, yet it has great things to do.

If you’re in Heidelberg, make sure you visit Heidelberg Castle, one of the most famous landmarks of the old town. It would help if you strolled along the Philosophers Walk to look across the Neckar River. If you’re looking for a location to feast, make your way into Schnitzelbank to sample the most OK Schnitzel available nationwide.

However, it’s also a lovely, laid-back university with a rich historical significance. It is situated on the river Dreisam (and is between green mountains). Freiburg is possibly one of the sunniest and warmest towns in Germany for you to explore.

When you’re there, visit the magnificent Augustinermuseum (Art Museum). Relax in Seepark and go to the Schwabentor. The old town has plenty of small eateries and cafes, too. If you’re looking for a bite, go to one of them, the Gasthaus Blume (who’ve come up with the most delicious salmon dishes ever).
