#Zoom suspends 40-minute cap on meetings for the holidays

Zoom is getting into the holiday spirit.

The popular video chat platform has announced that it will be temporarily suspending the 40-minute limit on call length for free subscribers during key holiday periods.

Normally, only users with paid Zoom memberships are allowed to host calls of unlimited lengths. Non-paying users need to hang up and begin a new call after their 40 minutes are up.

Now, non-paying users will be able to make unlimited calls during three upcoming holiday stretches. The first is the end of Hanukkah, from now until Saturday morning. The second stretches from the morning of Dec. 23 to the morning of Dec. 26, while the last goes from the morning of Dec. 30 to the morning of Jan. 2.

“Whether coming together on the final day of Hanukkah, celebrating Christmas, ringing in the New Year, or marking the last days of Kwanzaa, those connecting with friends and family won’t get cut short,” a Zoom spokesman said.

Zoom has seen its popularity skyrocket since March, with everything from schools to businesses to book clubs turning to the service as the coronavirus pandemic has kept people from gathering in person.

Alphabet’s Zoom rival Google Meet has also suspended its 60-minute call limit until March, while Microsoft Teams and Cisco’s Webex have not lifted their meeting length caps.

Shares of Zoom, which are up 265 percent since March, were up a quarter of a percent Friday morning, at $402.62.
