This was a triumph, and the cake is a lie.

Portal, the beloved first-person puzzle game released by Valve in 2007, is about to get its best-looking update in 15 years. Better yet, it’s completely free. Courtesy of NVIDIA, this wildly popular yet aging game will look nearly brand new.

NVIDIA is working with Valve and will release Portal with RTX on December 8th. The free DLC update will add RTX ray tracing and DLSS 3 support, reimagining one of my favorite games.

So, what does that mean for those not keeping track of the latest technology? Well, thanks to NVIDIA’s continued efforts with ray tracing, the game won’t look 15 years old anymore. That’s because the RTX and DLSS 3 technology will improve textures, and game models, add more realistic lighting and reflections, not to mention boost resolution and frame rates when using an NVIDIA GeForce graphics card.

Here’s a look at the technology from the announcement a few months ago.

I get excited just hearing the “Still Alive” song, and yes, Portal is still alive. NVIDIA recreated the game and DLC with its RTX Remix platform. Remember that you’ll need one of the last few generation GeForce graphics cards for the best experience, but I’m assuming some of the ray tracing will work with older machines or AMD cards.

More specifically, along with all the ray tracing makeup, the improvements from DLSS 3 are exclusive to NVIDIA’s latest 40-series GPUs, like the GTX 4090, and you’ll need a GeForce RTX 3-series to enjoy the slightly lower-quality DLSS 2 goodness.

Those looking for more details or a recommended specs list can find out more from NVIDIA’s announcement blog post. Again, as long as you own the original Portal on Steam, you can download and enjoy the RTX DLC free starting December 8th.
