The first season of Showtime’s Yellowjackets was pretty insane but it sounds like that was just the beginning.
“When we first pitched the show, we said we wanted to make a show about the best and the worst that people are capable of. Ultimately, whenever you’re telling stories, you’re really trying to examine, and to some extent, interrogate yourself. I think that ideally this premise gives us a lot of room to really investigate that concept and to do it in a way that is hopefully really fun as opposed to kind of academic or overly intellectual… I think that we’re just so excited to keep playing in this world. There are a lot of opportunities where we’re going and where we’ve been planning to go get darker and get weirder. We’ll likely get a lot more of both of those things but hopefully we can keep it fun.”
Lyle’s fellow co-creator Bart Nickerson also shed some light on the upcoming second season. Nickerson backs up Lyle’s assertion that things will grow more bizarre from where we left off with in season 1, but at the same time, the goal is not necessarily to be surprising but to do what’s best for the story.
“I do think it would be a good bet to say the show will grow in all the directions that Ashley was pointing to. I also know that that is not necessarily the point or the driver of kind of that expansion as much as it is being prepared to go where the show takes us. Our intention is not necessarily to be kind of provocative and surprising, but we try to not be hemmed in as we explore all the fun stuff that is in this stew that is Yellowjackets.”
Yellowjackets May Be Back Before the End of the Year
Fans may be happy to know that they won’t have to wait too long for new episodes of Yellowjackets. It was recently reported that the plan at Showtime is to get the series back for its second season by late 2022. That’s obviously a pretty fast turnaround time, but given the wave of momentum that the series is currently riding, the idea is to simply strike the iron while it’s hot.
How long Yellowjackets will ultimately last remains to be seen. The creators have teased a five-season run for the show, but Showtime is taking it season by season at this point. Season 1 certainly set the bar pretty high, but if season 2 also comes out strong, we’ll most likely see the story continue for some time to come.
The second season of Yellowjackets is expected to premiere on Showtime in late 2022.
