The New York Yankees entered their series in Oakland playing their best baseball with 11 straight wins and turn to Gerrit Cole on Friday against the Athletics to keep their playoff surge going.

Cole has been sharp since coming off the COVID list, giving up one run across 11²/₃ innings in two starts with 15 strikeouts and two walks. Cole’s 191 strikeouts are one shy of the AL lead, his 0.97 WHIP is best among qualifying starters and he has a 7.1 strikeout-to-walk rate in road games.

The Athletics’ Sean Manaea is on pace for a career-best strikeouts-per-nine-innings rate of 9.8 and has issued one walk or fewer in six of his last nine starts. He has given up three earned runs or fewer in 14 of his last 17 starts.

Oakland has hit the third-fewest home runs at home among AL teams this season, and the Yankees own the AL’s best ERA since the All-Star break and have allowed four runs or fewer in nine of their last 10 games, so it will be a pitchers’ duel Friday night in the Bay Area.
