As the Yankees sort out their bullpen for October, Scott Effross made a good impression in his return from the injured list Saturday in a 7-5 win over the Red Sox in The Bronx.

The right-hander, who had been sidelined with a shoulder strain since Aug. 22, pitched a scoreless ninth inning — getting into trouble, but then escaping.

And since the closer role is up for grabs, manager Aaron Boone said Effross, acquired at the trade deadline from the Cubs, will be as vital as anyone in the bullpen.

Asked if he could be used as a closer, Boone noted, “He was doing that before he went down and he did some of it with the Cubs this year.”

But with the way the Yankees’ relievers are throwing, Boone has made it clear that he wants them to pitch in a variety of roles on a daily basis.

“He can be in any role,’’ Boone said. “He’s been in some big spots for us and he’ll definitely continue to be in that high-leverage mix.”

On Saturday, Effross gave up a leadoff single to Rafael Devers in the ninth and hit Xander Bogaerts with a pitch, then walked Triston Casas with two outs before getting Bobby Dalbec to ground out to pick to the save.

Aaron Judge is just one home run away from matching Roger Maris’ American League and franchise record of 61, and he has continued to be in the lineup every day.

Boone said prior to the game he would decide on a daily basis whether Judge needs a day off, especially if the Yankees are able to clinch the division in the coming days.

“Hopefully we can stack up some wins here and put ourselves in position in the last week [of the regular season] where we’re resting, not just him, but other guys,” Boone said, adding Judge might DH on Sunday night.

Whether Judge getting to 62 homers will have an impact on his schedule, Boone said: “We’ll see. We’ll work through it every day.”
