#Yankees place Gleyber Torres on IL after concerning injury

KANSAS CITY — The hits keep coming from the Yankees, and not in a good way.

Gleyber Torres became the latest Yankee to land on the IL, as the team announced Monday he was placed on the 10-day IL with a sprained left thumb suffered during Sunday’s loss to the Mariners in The Bronx.

The Yankees brought up Fordham product Andrew Velazquez from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to take Torres’ spot on the roster.

Torres suffered the injury diving into second base on a steal in the fourth inning.

Although he was wearing a protective mitt on his right hand, Torres dove in with his bare left hand and came up in pain.

“A little concerned about him right now,” manager Aaron Boone said following Sunday’s loss.

After initially staying in the game — and going 3-for-4 — the shortstop was pulled in the ninth inning for Tyler Wade following a strikeout out in the bottom of the eighth.

“As the game went on, he just felt kind of the instability hitting,” Boone said.

Additionally, right-hander Nick Nelson was also recalled from SWB on Monday.
