“Yankees optimistic DJ LeMahieu won’t need surgery on injured foot”

There is optimism around the Yankees that DJ LeMahieu won’t need surgery to repair the foot fracture that plagued him throughout the second half of the season and sidelined the infielder for the playoffs.

GM Brian Cashman and manager Aaron Boone said this week at the winter meetings that LeMahieu continued to improve and was doing baseball activities in Tampa, and a source said he isn’t expected to need a procedure at this point.

LeMahieu had been scheduled to see a foot specialist this past week regarding the fractured sesamoid bone in his right big toe.

He and the Yankees had tried to rest it during the season, but the issue persisted after it became an issue in mid-July.

Robbed of his power, LeMahieu sat for most of September in hopes of being able to return for the postseason, but a brief stint back in the lineup at the end of the regular season in Texas convinced the Yankees otherwise.

A surgery with this injury has been described as complicated, with a potentially long recovery time that would keep LeMahieu on the IL into the season.

The Yankees are already facing some uncertainty with their infield.

Anthony Rizzo re-signed and will be at first base, but the Yankees already looked into moving Gleyber Torres at last season’s trade deadline, and the organization’s hierarchy has talked publicly about giving Oswald Peraza a chance to take the starting shortstop spot and perhaps give top prospect Anthony Volpe an opportunity to win a job, as well.

Josh Donaldson, who is due $27 million, remains the third baseman unless the Yankees can find a taker for the last year of his contract, which would cost the Yankees at least one prospect.

If LeMahieu is able to play on Opening Day, he could start at first, second or third.

But he’s dealt with injuries each of the past two seasons, with a core muscle injury impacting LeMahieu in 2021 and the foot issues last season.

They are counting on him to stay healthy, since LeMahieu would also give the Yankees another contact hitter, something they lacked after LeMahieu, Andrew Benintendi and Matt Carpenter all went down with injuries.

Benintendi and Carpenter are free agents. The Yankees are very interested in bringing Benintendi back to play left field, but they have plenty of competition.

And though they would also like to bring back Carpenter, both sides are aware there likely isn’t a spot for him on the roster with Giancarlo Stanton at DH and Rizzo at first.
