Thursday night’s season opener for both teams is in danger of being postponed by rain, with a shaky forecast set for Washington that includes the potential of severe thunderstorms. If it is rained out, the game will be played Friday, with Gerrit Cole facing Max Scherzer.
General manager Brian Cashman, who signed the coveted Cole to a nine-year, $324 million deal in December, acknowledged the right-hander’s Yankees debut might be pushed back.
“With this weather, it might be a little longer,’’ Cashman said of the delay in getting to see his prized free-agent signing pitch his first game in pinstripes.
After taking the train from New York to Washington on Wednesday afternoon, the Yankees had their workout at Nationals Park mostly washed out by a storm. Players were able to workout inside, but Aaron Boone remained disappointed.
“I wish it wasn’t pouring right now and we could get out on the field and take BP and our pitchers could play catch in the grass and things like that,’’ the manager said.
