#Yankees’ Jordan Montgomery set to pitch Game 6

WASHINGTON — According to Aaron Boone, optioning Jordan Montgomery to the Yankees’ alternate training site on Tuesday was done to provide roster flexibility and nothing more.

“He will go in Game 6 essentially. He is with us and he will throw Friday on the off day,’’ Boone said Wednesday via Zoom from Nationals Park, where the Yankees and Nationals open the season Thursday evening if the rain stays away.

After James Paxton starts the second game of the season on Saturday night, the Yankees plan to use relievers at the beginning of Sunday’s game instead of J.A. Happ.

“It lines up with [Masahiro Tanaka] potentially. That is essentially the day Masa is going to pitch again. He will throw a simulated game down in Scranton. If everything goes well he could slide into that spot five days later,’’ Boone said of Tanaka, who didn’t pitch in intrasquad or exhibition games after getting hit in the head by a Giancarlo Stanton liner on July 4. “Also with Gerrit going [Thursday], off day, and James going on Saturday, we feel we would be set up with not only having guys with length, but guys that we really like in a matchup-type game. Then you slot J.A. in there with Geritt potentially coming back and Monty after that.’’

Boone wouldn’t commit to a lineup for Thursday’s game and said “still kind of working through that’’ when asked if DJ LeMahieu will play. LeMahieu played in the final two exhibition games of spring training 2.0 after his arrival was delayed by a positive test for COVID-19.

The Yankees have used trains in the past to get to and from Baltimore, so Wednesday’s rail ride to Washington wasn’t a first.

“It was a lot like when we take a train,’’ said Boone, whose club went directly from the train station to Nationals Park for a workout that was forced indoors by rain. “Obviously it was different in that we were wearing masks and the food is not laid out like it normally is on our charters but all in all it felt very much like a normal trip.’’

His grandfather, father and brother and he played in the big leagues, so Opening Day has long been a big deal to Boone.

“Opening Day has been part of my life my entire life,’’ Boone said Wednesday. “It is all I know. It is one of the holidays of the year for me and my family. It is a privilege to be part of a major league Opening Day. That will be the case [Thursday night] in unique circumstances as I have ever experienced probably. In my mind there is something great about Opening Day. It’s important to celebrate and appreciate.’’

The Yankees will commemorate former general partner/co-chairperson Hank Steinbrenner by wearing a HGS patch on the left sleeve of their home and away jerseys for entire regular season and postseason should the Yankees get in.

Steinbrenner, 63, passed away on April 14 in Clearwater, Fla., due to a longstanding health issue.
