#Yankees are taking it slow with Aroldis Chapman

Aroldis Chapman continues to progress in his comeback from a battle with COVID-19, but there still is no return date set for the Yankee closer.

“I don’t expect it anytime soon,’’ Yankees manager Aaron Boone said of when the 32-year-old Chapman might be activated to the roster.

Boone added that Chapman was scheduled to throw a bullpen Wednesday at the team’s alternate site in Scranton, Pa., another step in his comeback. Chapman is set to have “at least a couple” of bullpen sessions at Scranton before he faces live hitters.

“I feel like physically, he’s in a good spot and we’ll just monitor how each bullpen goes [and] how his live BPs go and make a smart decision about when to bring him back,’’ Boone said. “But we won’t rush him.”

Boone and the Yankees have that luxury in part due to their deep bullpen, which also features Zack Britton, who entered Wednesday with four saves in as many chances.

“What it comes down to is having depth and quality arms,’’ Boone said of the bullpen’s early success.

The bullpen added another arm Wednesday, when right-hander Luis Cessa was activated prior to the doubleheader. Catcher Chris Iannetta, who had been designated for assignment, was outrighted to alternate site in Scranton.

Tommy Kahnle, out for the season, underwent Tommy John surgery Tuesday. The Yankees announced it went “as expected.”
