“#Woman killed in brazen NYC slay was lured by phone call: kin”
Kin of the Brooklyn woman killed by a female shooter in a brazen caught-on-video crime say the victim was lured to her death with a phone call — and that her murderer was a “family friend” they recognized from the footage.
“She was on the block with us, she got a phone call, and when she got the phone call, she said, ‘I’ll be right back,’ ” longtime pal Shawn Johnson, 43, recalled Friday, referring to victim Delia Johnson, 42.
“Twenty minutes later, somebody called me and told me she got shot,” he said of Delia. “I told him he was lying. I was just standing here with her.”
Police released two zoomed-in photos of the suspected killer Friday — and family members said they recognize her from the snapshot showing the woman’s face.
“I know her!” exclaimed Delia’s mother, Delia Barry. “Oh my God, oh my God, she used to stay with us. She slept in my bed, ate my food.”
One of the victim’s younger sisters, Hadijah Pendley, called the suspect “a family friend who came to our family events, celebrations, holidays — whatever you want to call it, she came.”
Cops declined comment. The motive is still unclear.
Another sister, Khadyah Barry, said, “I know in my heart that somebody called her and knew what it was and set my sister up.
“Nobody can tell me otherwise,” she said.
Delia was talking on the phone on a crowded Prospect Heights street Tuesday around 9:40 p.m. when an assailant with a purse walked up to her and blasted her in the head before nonchalantly walking back to a double-parked SUV and driving away.
On the night of Delia’s death, Khadyah, 28, said she was looking for a parking spot when she saw the ambulance, not realizing her big sister was the victim they were whisking away.
“I ran down the street trying to get to her, but by the time I got to her, they took her,” the sister recalled.
“That’s heartless,” she said, weeping, of the shooting. “My sister didn’t deserve that at all.”
Delia Barry said she just wants “to know what happened.
“Why did you slaughter her like that?” the sobbing mom said, addressing her daughter’s killer.
“I just want to know why. What could she have done to you that you couldn’t come and knock on my door and tell me? I would have straightened it out for both of you all,” the mother said.
“You are hurting families. I’m in so much pain, I don’t know what to do.
“She was my baby. … This person that shot my daughter, may God have mercy on your family, because we put curses on ourselves when we do things.”
The mother described how Johnson was her firstborn child who excelled in piano and tap dancing and later, caretaking when the mom’s health started to fail.
“I will never forget when I was in so much pain, and she was right there for me,” Barry recalled of a surgery she underwent and how Johnson was the first one at the hospital to help her.
“I am going to miss her bringing me some food when I wasn’t feeling well. When a child can wash and clean their own mother, that’s love.
“She’d say, ‘You know you get my nerves sometimes, Mommy, but you know I love you.’ I’d say, ‘You get on my nerves, too, but I love you, too.’ ”
