#Winter Storm Gail brings over 3 feet of snow to Binghamton

Residents of Binghamton posted wild images of snow burying the upstate city, after Winter Storm Gail dumped more than three feet of powder in the region.

The Southern Tier city had been walloped with 41 inches of snow as of 8:40 a.m. Thursday, according to a National Weather Service update

One video posted to Twitter shows cars nearly completely covered in snow.

One resident tweeted the more-than-waist-high pile of powder that greeted her when she opened the door.

Another photo captures a man submerged as he walks to the town around 2 a.m.

The weather service reported an “intense snow band” that set up overnight around the Binghamton area, causing snow to fall at about 4 to 5 inches per hour.

The city was placed under a State of Emergency Thursday, according to Mayor Rich David.

“City Hall offices are closed Thursday, with public safety and essential personnel still reporting,” he tweeted. “Residents must stay off the roads to allow plow crews to clear snow.”

Albany’s snowfall totals came nowhere near Binghampton’s, but the city still set records of its own.

“With a storm total snowfall of 17.5″ at the Albany Airport as of 7AM (obviously above that by now), not only have we surpassed the daily record snow for Dec 17th (11.1″ in 1970) but this storm will rank among the top 10 largest December snowstorms on record since 1884,” the National Weather Service tweeted.

Meanwhile, the Big Apple saw between 6 and 10 inches of snow, and its northern suburbs got pounded with anywhere from 8 to 16.
