After the NFL admitted it was “wrong” in how it handled players protesting racial injustice in response to a widely circulated video compilation of black players speaking out against police brutality, actor Terry Crews — who played 32 games in the NFL — offered up his own message of solidarity.

“I retired from the @nfl 23 years ago. The league has always been racist, but back then you ignored degrading treatment to improve the conditions of your family,” Crews wrote on Twitter along with Saints’ wide receiver Michael Thomas’ post of the NFL video. “I thought it was all I had. Now I know better — and these men do too. I love you guys.”

Crews, the 51-year-old “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” star, played for the Rams, Chargers and Redskins from 1991 to 1995. He also played for NFL Europe’s Rhein Fire in 1995 and had a brief stint on the Eagles’ practice squad in 1996 before retiring from football the following year.

The powerful video – which featured big-name players like Patrick Mahomes, Odell Beckham Jr., Saquon Barkley and Ezekiel Elliott – was created without league approval by an NFL video producer named Bryndon Minter, according to The Athletic.

“I decided, ‘Hey, I’m just going to go rogue here. If I can get one player to buy in, we’ll take a chance at this and see what can happen,’” Minter told The Athletic.

Minter said he made the decision after deciding that the NFL wasn’t doing enough in response to the death of George Floyd, who died last month after former Minneapolis cop Derek Chauvin pressed his knee into Floyd’s neck for more than eight minutes. Minter recruited Thomas to help him persuade “top guys in the league” to contribute to the video, per The Athletic.

The solidarity video prompted NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to respond in a video message released Friday night, which addressed the three specific statements the players asked the NFL to make about racism, social injustice and peaceful protests.

“We, the National Football League, condemn racism and the systematic oppression of black people,” Goodell said. “We, the National Football League, admit we were wrong for not listening to NFL players earlier and encourage all players to speak out and peacefully protest. We, the National Football League, believe that black lives matter.”
