#Why did Netflix cancel The Holiday director Nancy Meyers’ $130 million rom-com?

“Why did Netflix cancel The Holiday director Nancy Meyers’ $130 million rom-com?”

No one does rom-coms quite like Nancy Meyers does but that doesn’t seem to be reason enough for Netflix to keep her next one in production. The director was touted to return to the big screen after almost a decade with a new Netflix film. However, the streaming platform’s studio has pulled the plug on the upcoming rom-com.

As of now, there is no statement from either Nancy Meyers nor Netflix regarding the film’s cancellation. However, it seems unlikely that the dropped project will find new takers due to its mammoth budget. Let’s take a look at what we know about the film so far and why Netflix didn’t proceed with a decently hyped project.

Netflix scraps Nancy Meyers’ high budget rom-com

While Netflix is yet to comment on the film’s shutdown, reports suggest that Nancy Meyers’ upcoming rom-com was shelved due to budget reasons. The studio and the director could not reach an agreement over the film’s final budget.

The director demanded a minimum of $150 million while Netflix did not want to go anywhere north of $130 million. Nancy Meyers’ proposed budget would have made the film the most expensive romantic comedy of all time. The steep price tag was mainly due to a star-studded cast for the film.

Meyers is known for working with an ensemble cast with some of the best actors and biggest stars in Hollywood. Throughout her film career, Meyers has collaborated with some legendary names in the business such as Jack Nicholson, Meryl Streep, Robert de Niro and Kate Winslet.

What do we know about Nancy Meyers’ discontinued Netflix film?

With a rumored working title of Paris Paramount, the rom-com’s official announcement came earlier in 2022. The film’s tentative cast included A-listers like Scarlett Johansson, Michael Fassbender, Penelope Cruz and Owen Wilson.

The film’s premise revolved around a love story between a young director and a producer who make successful films together. After calling it quits, they both reunite for work with higher stakes involved.

Nancy Meyers’ own romantic and professional relationship with Charles Shyer, a fellow writer-director-producer, seems to be the inspiration behind the film.

Nancy Meyers’ impressive filmography of rom-coms

Her new Netflix rom-com may never see the light of day but that does not affect Nancy Meyers’ impressive filmography. Meyers’ rom-coms are characterized by their beautifully crafted sets and relatable characters that resonate with audiences worldwide.

Her notable films include Something’s Gotta Give, The Holiday, and It’s Complicated, which all feature an ensemble cast of well-known actors and actresses. Her collaboration with Charles Shyer led her to work on films such as Private Benjamin, Baby Boom, The Parent Trap and Father of the Bride

Her most recent film, The Intern, was released in 2015 and stars Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway. Throughout her career, Meyers has remained a consistent force in the romantic comedy genre.
