“#What did Bruce Campbell reveal about the new Evil Dead movie?”
Bruce Campbell reveals the first piece of news surrounding the next installment of the Evil Dead franchise, titled Evil Dead Now
Someone has once again dug up the Necronomicon and summoned the Deadites because, apparently, when you find a weird book with a face, the only thing you can do is read from it. Whenever you think the dead are gone, they always come back and now they’re returning in the new film Evil Dead Now, the next film in the Evil Dead franchise.
The idea for this film has gone through many development changes since it was originally announced in 2013. After the release of Fede Alvarez’s 2013 modern adaptation, Sam Raimi stated that he was planning another film that would focus on the character Mia (Jane Levy).
Plans for the franchise would have included remaking each of the original films, with Evil Dead 2.0 and Army of Darkness 2 to be followed by a crossover film that would merge the narratives of Ash and Mia together.
This, unfortunately, never happened, but plans for another Evil Dead were never officially taken off the table. There was later a television series sequel titled Ash vs. Evil Dead, which took place nearly 30 years after the events of Army of Darkness. Bruce Campbell believed that the series would be as close to a follow-up film they would ever get. However, in 2019 Raimi confirmed that another film was in development.
Will Bruce Campbell return?
Bruce Campbell is done playing Ash but he’s still in the know when it comes to all things Evil and Dead. Speaking to Empire, Campbell opened up about the latest developments around the new film and Lee Cronin, the director Raimi has entrusted in.
“We’re just getting off the phone with Lee Cronin, who is writing and directing the next Evil Dead,” he confirmed. “It’s called Evil Dead Now. Sam handpicked Lee – he did a cool movie called The Hole In The Ground. We’re going to get that sucker out as soon as practical.”
Campbell also revealed that Evil Dead Now will not focus on Ash, or any other male hero, but will instead center around a female protagonist.
“From this point forward, they kind of have to stand on their own. Which is fine. And liberating,” says Campbell. “You could have different heroes, different heroines in this case. This one’s gonna be a little more dynamic.” He said, “We jut want to keep the series current. And the mantra, really, is that our heroes and heroines are just regular people. That’s what we’re going to continue.”
Evil Dead Now is presumed to be an entirely new film in the franchise with no ties to the original films, series, or the 2013 film. Although it will likely take place within the same universe. Maybe we can hope for a cameo or two.
Evil Dead Now has not yet announced the date of production or release.
