BMW is doing something unexpected. Its Middle East subsidiary just released a promotional video for the Dune Taxi EV. It features a dune buggy-style vehicle shredding the streets of Liwa, Abu Dhabi, then venturing into the Tal Moreeb desert to tackle some of the highest sand dunes in the world.

While the electric taxi may technically be an SUV, its form and function better resemble the Batmobile from Chris Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy. And while this is not the first time we’ve seen a high-performance EV take on extreme desert terrain, this four-minute video fully displays the technology’s real-life performance potential.

The Dune Taxi is a monster of an EV. It produces 400kW (over 530 horsepower) and has 1,000Nm of torque. The taxi in the video sports dual kidney grills, LED lights, and an airscoop hood. The video states that the vehicle is constructed of natural fiber reinforced polymer and plant fibers to make it environmentally friendly.

It’s unclear what BMW intends to do with the Dune Taxi. However, there are several extreme environment races for EV vehicles. Perhaps we’ll see the Dune Taxi take on the most recent winner of the Darker Rally, the Audi RS Q e-Tron.
