From Hollywood acting greats Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton to long-time couple and accomplished actors Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith, some of the greatest movies featured real-life famous couples. Classic Hollywood legends Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor were the talk of the town and one of the most famous couples in the world when they starred alongside one another in the 1966 drama Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, portraying a dysfunctional and mean-spirited husband and wife. The Oscar-winning picture went on to win five Academy Awards including Best Actress for Taylor, and was critically acclaimed upon its release. At the time, the glamorous duo were dubbed “Liz and Dick” by the media and were notorious for their jet-set lifestyle, and their high-profile relationship “became a cottage industry of speculation about their alleged life of excess. From reports of massive spending, affairs, and even an open marriage, the couple came to represent a new era of ‘gotcha’ celebrity coverage, where the more personal the story, the better.” The acting greats starred in 11 films together and broke up and reconciled numerous times before officially going their separate ways in 1976.

The Michael Mann film garnered praise and earned Smith an Oscar nomination for Best Actor, though Pinkett-Smith was initially hesitant to take on the role and felt she wasn’t right for it. Though she loved the final product, the actress revealed: “I felt like because we were a couple off-screen, for people to see us together on the screen in a movie like this, would take people out of the movie, that people would see Will and Jada there–they wouldn’t see Ali and Sonji.” Regardless of her concerns, the couple shined on-screen and have been married since 1997, though they haven’t starred as a couple in a movie together since Ali.
