#Watch New Radicals Perform “You Get What You Give” for Biden Inauguration

As promised, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris’ Inauguration Day celebration included a virtual parade that featured the reunited New Radicals. Remotely, the band delivered a one-time performance 22 years after breaking up in 1999. Watch them do their 1998 hit “You Get What You Give” below (at 06:42:52).

Following the announcement of the band’s reunion for the inauguration parade, many on social media wondered whether or not they’d update the song’s original bridge—which mentions both political issues (the FDA, big banks, cloning) and the headline-making pop stars of the late ’90s (Beck, Hanson, Courtney Love, and Marilyn Manson). They ended up omitting the references.

The song holds sentimental weight for the Biden family—a song that Beau Biden would listen to with his family in his final days. “Performing the song again after such a long time is a huge honor because we all have deep respect for Beau’s military service and such high hopes for the unity and normalcy Joe and Kamala will bring our country again in this time of crisis,” New Radicals frontman Gregg Alexander said in a statement.

Biden was sworn in to office earlier today. Lady Gaga sang the national anthem; Jennifer Lopez sang a medley of “This Land Is Your Land” and “America the Beautiful”; and Garth Brooks sang “Amazing Grace.” Tonight, a special will feature performances from Bruce Springsteen, Justin Timberlake and Ant Clemons, Foo Fighters, and more.

New Radicals’ “You Get What You Give” was named one of Pitchfork’s “Top 200 Tracks of the 1990s.”
