#Sam Darnold takes crucial step toward Jets return vs. Bills

Sam Darnold is inching towards his return.

The injured quarterback will practice on a limited basis on Wednesday, coach Adam Gase said, and if he continues to progress, could be back under center Sunday against the Bills.

Darnold has missed the past two games with a sprained AC joint in his right throwing shoulder and has been replaced by Joe Flacco, who has struggled in a pair of losses.

“Right now, all options are available,” Gase said. “We’ll have him on a pitch-count. … The biggest thing is how he’s going to feel tomorrow.”

Darnold suffered the injury in an Oct. 1 loss to the Broncos at MetLife Stadium. He returned and finished out the game, but hasn’t played since.

“It’s one of those situations where we need him to be real honest,” Gase said.

Darnold was one of a few positive injury developments on Wednesday for the Jets. Rookie left tackle Mekhi Becton (shoulder) is also expected to practice after missing the last two games and Gase was hopeful rookie Denzel Mims (hamstrings) would be able to make his NFL debut Sunday. If Mims can go, it would be the first time the Jets would have their starting receivers — Mims, Breshad Perriman and Jamison Crowder — on the field together all season.

“I think we got a chance,” Gase said.
