That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime won the Summer 2021 Anime of the Season title, finally clinching the award after three attempts. It won over Remake our Life! by just 23 votes, the fourth closest winning margin overall in a seasonal tally and the closest since Fall 2019. Sword Art Online holds the closest winning margin record, with just 5 votes over Fate/Grand Order – Absolute Demonic Front: Babylonia back in Fall 2019, while second place belongs to Attack on Titan S2 Part I edging out Angels of Death in Summer 2018 (10 votes). Gamers! rounds out the top three with its lead over Fate/Apocrypha in Summer 2017 (21 votes).

This marks the third consecutive time that a sequel anime has won the Anime of the Season title, with Re:ZERO – Starting Life in Another World S2 Part II winning in Winter 2021 and Fruits Basket: The Final Season winning in Spring 2021. Each of the three won on its third attempt.
Slime’s male lead, Rimuru Tempest, also won on his third attempt for the best boy award, which he nearly won when the show first aired back in Fall 2018 but instead placed second behind Koutarou Tatsumi (Zombie Land Saga). Meanwhile, Veldora Tempest also won the best supporting male character award for the show, becoming the second character from Slime to win this award. The first one to do so was Gobuta. Slime won two more awards: Favorite Action or Adventure and Favorite Fantasy.
Siesta (The Detective is Already Dead) was voted as this season’s best girl, despite her show receiving mixed reception among its viewers. Based on comments observed within Anime Trending’s community, those who had expressed that they didn’t like the show had also stated that they still voted for Siesta as this season’s best girl. With the win, Siesta earns an automatic nomination as this year’s best girl — the sole nomination that The Detective is Already Dead received for the upcoming 8th Anime Trending Awards.
The victory of Slime denies Studio feel. a fourth Anime of the Season title as Remake our Life! placed second behind Slime.Remake our Life! instead received the Best New Anime of the Season award after finishing as the highest ranking non-sequel anime for Summer 2021. In other categories, Remake had a rivalry with The Duke of Death and His Maid as the two shows battled neck and neck over three awards. Kyouya Hashiba and Aki Shino gave Remake the Favorite Couple/Ship award but, despite this, the show lost to Duke for the Favorite Romance Anime award. Duke, meanwhile, lost to Remake for the Favorite Drama Anime award.
Bones was also denied a fourth Anime of the Season title as Slime’s other rival, The Case Study of Vanitas, placed third overall. Still, Vanitas took home the award for Favorite Supernatural Anime and Favorite Supporting Female Character, courtesy of Jeanne.
Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid S placed fourth overall in the Anime of the Season standings, and the anime marks Kyoto Animation’s return to the anime production scene after the tragic arson attack back in July 2019. Dragon Maid almost swept the season’s theme song awards after winning the Favorite Opening Theme Song with fhana’s “Ai no Supreme!” The show’s ending theme song, “Maid with Dragons,” placed second behind “Dream On” by Mamoru Miyano, the ending theme of Life Lessons with Uramichi Onii-san. Kobayashi also won Favorite Slice of Life and Favorite Comedy.
Overall, this season was dubbed as the weakest so far this year, as observed by various anime fans in different communities. Our total vote tally for this season seems to reflect that opinion, dropping to 48,789 votes from last season’s 78,005 total votes, a decrease of about 37.45%. It is the lowest tally since the Winter 2020 Anime Season, which had 36,596 votes.

Nominations for the 8th Anime Trending Awards:
Since Slime was already nominated for Anime of the Year back in Winter 2021, the staff of Anime Trending allowed Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid S into the Anime of the Year nominations, despite not meeting the first qualification requirement of having less than a 5% vote percentage difference. VPD is calculated by subtracting the total percentage of votes that the winner got against the total percentage of votes of another anime. Kobayashi’s nomination marks the second time that the show was nominated for Anime of the Year, the first one being the 4th Anime Trending Awards (2017), where it placed last among the 19 nominees.

Despite being tagged as the weakest season of the year, Summer 2021 has the most anime with a nomination for the upcoming 8th Anime Trending Awards than the other seasons — 18 anime have at least one. The Case Study of Vanitas leads the nominations with 10, securing two nominees for Boy of the Year and two for Jeanne, as she secures a nomination for both Girl of the Year and Supporting Girl of the Year.
